RACIN' HIGH & DRY!!! By Becky
WHAT A GRAND RACE DAY!!! Finally, we had an event that was high and dry-not even a sprinkle!! Good start for a grand lookin’ year!!! Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Houston Motor Speedway turned out to be over-ran and over-whelmed with over-excited heads-up sportsman classes comin’ out of the woodwork with any make or model bike. There were Harley Nitro Top Fuelers and Harley Top Gasers doing what they do best-race down the tarmac. Vendors were happy campers in the pit areas with booths full of merchandise. Whenever I looked over in their general area, their booths seemed mighty busy. In fact, everyone from the racers to the spectators were getting’ down partying and racin’ their hearts out that day. Our stunt bike group for today’s event was performed by Illegal Intentions out of Beaumont, TX. Let’s get on down to racing- Out of Baytown, MAD Racing’s Mark Derryberry came on out with his Harley Nitro-snotin’ Top Fueler to make a couple exhibition passes on his monster. I want to thank him for his show!! The two top fuel eliminators were between Nitro Scott Ianaro and John Dulevy.
Houston’s very own, Nitro Boys Racing’s “Nitro” Scott Ianaro is sponsored by KT Cycles and CP Pistons. His crew members are Nitro KT, Nitro Joe, Nitro Gary along with crew chief Nitro Dog (that’s KT’s real-life puppy). Nitro Scott says, “Nitro shakes the gates of Hell.” Out of San Antonio, Dunlevy Family Racing’s John Dunlevy who’s sponsored by American Overhead Door. His crew members are Kim Dunlevy, Kayla Dunlevy, David Bawcom, Buda, Gordy, and Victor. John says, “Race hard. Help hard. Treat everyone with respect along with kindness first because you never no what burden they maybe carrying.” In the last round of elimination, Nitro Scott had his hands full with John wanting to take the win from. Both monster Nitro-snortin’ Harleys approached the launch pad- Nitro Scott with his Nitro crew getting into position to fire-up…John with his fine crew members also getting’ ready…anticipation is high…you can feel the anxiety…the stress factor is on!!! The fence line is over flowin’ to the brim with spectators biddin’ to get a front row seat…to watch one of the main attractions of the day. Then all of a sudden, the AWESOME-FACTOR IS ON!!! The roar of both motors started the earth shakin’ n’ the heaven’s started thunderin’ with so much noise that the spectators could hardly stay afoot. Then both pilots lined up to the startin’ line with the motors justa roarin’ n’ thumpin’ with the desire to get-on-down-the-track. As the lites fell on the xmas tree…it seemed like a lifetime…the pilots hearts were beating so loudly that we could almost hear it over the sound of their monster motors…these pilots are just about to live life to the fullest in five seconds…lites turn green…off they launch…both front wheels off the ground and tryin’ to kiss the skies…totally relying on their wheelie-bars for support and their only safety…smoke bellows up from their rear tires in clouds like an atom bomb…nitro squrtin’ out of their fuel systems…deafenin’ noise blaring out of their monsters by the crack of their throttles that would make a deaf person jump…and all of this is within five feet of the startin’ line. As the seconds flashed by, the winner prevailed but it was neck-to-neck by just a fraction of 200ths of second. GREAT ACTION BETWEEN TWO GRAND RACERS!!! Nitro Scott just barely took the win with et 5.35 at 129.43 mph versus John’s et 5.37 at 128.00 mph. Racin’ doesn’t get any better.
The Harley Top Gas class saw Drop Dead Racing’s Terry Teague of Galveston on his Harley Destroyer and Cherry Family Racing’s Al Cherry of Rye.
GRUDGE MATCH of the CENTURY!!! MC CREATION'S GREG HALE on his HARLEY 1947 JOCKEY-SHIFT 61 CUBIC INCH KNUCKLEHEAD CHALLENGED BRAD JOHNSON on his HARLEY 1949 TANK SHIFT 74 CUBIC INCH PANHEAD. When they came up to the starting line, it took quit a few minutes to kick-start their bikes...thought there was a bunch of betting for who would start first. Then finally- they both started, lined up, off they went...the WINNER was Brad Johnson. Bracket C finalists saw Houston’s Paul W. Holman with a dial-in 7.07 laying an et 7.1277 at 85.85 mph taking the win over Livingston’s Lee Paterson’s dial-in 6.49 and laying an et of 6.5439 at 98.08 mph.

Now since we have all the heads-up class winners, we’re taking each winner’s dial-in for the prestigious KING of the Cash. The final pair ended with YM Class George Boothe out of Houston and VR David Smith out of LaMarque, TX. The YM Class is Hayabusa over 1000cc that are modified without boxes. The VR Class is Harley V-Rods. So here we have a Hayabusa versus a Harley on a dial-in racin’ for the loot or booty. David Smith had a brand-new V-rod and he never raced before-ever. He also had beginners luck by winning first place, the trophy, and the MONEY!!! GREAT RACING EVERYONE!!! See ya at San Antonio!!!
