RACIN' IN THEM THAR HILLS
BY BECKY
Texas Motorcycle Drag Racing traveled to Yankee Land – Sturgis Dragway during the 70th Anniversary of the Black Hills Bike Rally on August 10th and 11th, 2010. We were asked, we humbly accepted, and secured our borders by raising our Great Country of Texas’s Flag – right under the Grand American Flag at the Granddaddy of all race tracks – where Harley drag racing has been prominent for 69 years. However, this year, TMDR had the first metric bike to race on this track. History was made since we are the “Home of All-Bike Drag Racing”. In fact, the first metric bike down the track officially was Matthew Fredricks of Roy, UT on his 2007 Suzuki Hayabusa which was August 10th. He won his class and King of the Cash. Says he’ll be back next year, of course.

HARLEY TOP FUEL WINNER
CHUCK JONES OF BAHNMAIER RACING
Right plum in the middle of the biggest darn biker party, we had the honor of having some of the greatest racers on this planet to compete against the best of the best at the oldest rally in the picturesque Black Hills –where Custer made his last stand – TMDR made its first. Next year promises to be bigger, better than ever with promising corporate sponsorships getting on board for guaranteed purses. This year, TMDR wants to say thank you to our sponsors; Coonass Racing’s Randal Andres, Double Trouble Tattoo, Skunk Dots Biker Magazine, TMFC Racing Team, Mike Bahnmaier, and, of course, Sturgis Dragway for asking us. A big thanks for Skunk Dots very own reporter Skippy for helping to announce our event ..we took him out of his element – and he done a sure fine job.
TMDR met a lot of new friends – we’ve extended our racing family further even across the borders to Canada. Nice people but they sure do talk funny (they said I talked funny-ya, right). The Pro’s got to camp on track for free which allowed them to go and partake of the party outside of our secured area. It was pretty scary out there. I am going to tell ya a story but I will not mention names to keep the guilty innocent. I was going thru the racer’s pits and stopped by a group of racers and/or associates wearing beads around their necks. They asked me if I was next door at Glencoe Campground yet. I confirmed that I was not yet and asked why. Well, I imagine since I am female and they are men, they pointed out that a couple fellas next door were naked – except for beads around their wing-wam. WELL, I LOOKED AT THESE FELLAS AND ASKED WHERE EXACTLY DID THEY GET THEIR BEADS? Needless, to say, they forgot, I WRITE STORIES AND WAS HAVING FUN WITH THIS. That’s all I have to say.

HARLEY PRO FUEL WINNER
BANDIDO ROCKSTONE
I’m not bragging but TMDR had a showing of the bestest, the awesomest, the fearlessest, the insanest, the nicest, the weirdest, and the infamousest racers to grace Sturgis Dragway and us since the first race 70 years ago. The whole Black Hills rally was started by ten Jack Pine Gypsies on a dirt road competing with the Harleys. Now this event has evolved to include Metric bikes and Nitro-Snortin’ Harleys to end up being one of the ‘Greatest Drag Racing on this Planet” at the Granddaddy of any eighth mile tracks.
During our two days of drag racing, we had qualifying of the Pros on Tuesday and Eliminations on Wednesday. However, we had a complete run-off of Sportsman racers each day with winners, trophies, money, and glory.

Don’t let them fool ya thou, they had their war paint on. Matt Fredericks said he’ll be back next year to mark and verify his place in history.
The second day, August 11, saw a couple more rounds of Pro qualifying before we got down to eliminations. There were a lot of racers which I wish I could mention but thank you to all for your competition. The first pair in the first round of Nitro Top Fuel saw Mike Bahnmaier Racing’s Chuck Jones doing a bye-which is a single pass by his self since he had the best qualifying spot. Chuck Jones ran a 5.49et. The next pair saw Griffith vs. Bahnmaier. Kansas’s Jerry “Griff” Griffith is sponsored ny Griffith Steel Erection and Erection with Perfection. (ok, did I read that right?) Mike Bahnmaier won with et 5.15. The last pair saw Tony vs. Breckenridge. WFO Drag Racing’s John Breckenridge from Sultan, WA for making a show. John’s sponsored by Berdahl Oil, NGK Spark Plugs, Union Iron Workers, Lyndal Racing, and Barnett Clutches. Tony won with 5.95et against John’s 5.96.
The second round of eliminations of Nitro Top Fuel eliminations saw Jones vs. Bahnmaier. Mid-Continent Motorsports Mike Bahnmaier is sponsored by Chassis Werks, Mike’s Metal Polishing, and Gates Belts. The second round of Nitro Top Fuel eliminations saw Jones vs. Bahnmaier. Mid-Continent Motorsports Mike Bahnmaier is sponsored by Chassis Werks, Mike’s Metal Polishing, and Gates Belts. Chuck Jones is Mike Bahnmaier’s hired gun-pilot on Mike’s other bike. Chuck Jones is from Tampa, FL and Mike Bahnmaier is from Wichita, KS. Chuck had better be nice and let his paycheck-I mean boss win. However, Chuck was brave )or foolish) and won with 4.74et at 145.46mph. Mike ran 5.26 at 146.10mph.
Last round saw Toni Froehling who’s sponsored by Ultra of Orting, WA doing a sure win with a bye- run taking him to the final round. The final round or pair saw Chuck Jones vs. Tony Froehling. This was a tug-a-war contest that any spectator would enjoy. We witnessed a feud against the East Coast and the West Coast. A battle between the meaner and the meanest…an all out Nitro full blown monsters wanting the gold…Black Hills Hold…the braggin’ rights….the trophy…and, of course, their pictures in the winner circle with the trophy girls on the Granddaddy of all race tracks…the real reason why the Black Hills Rally has even begun 70 years ago. We have both bikes, riders, shaking hands, getting their safety leathers and helmets on, saying a lil’ prayer, mounting their outrageous machines that will take them on a ride of life and a lifetime of living in just 5 seconds. They both are given the signal to start up and the THUNDER rumbled all the way to the stoned heads in the mountains (Mt. Rushmore). As the X-mas tree lites fell, they were gone in a blink…Tony ran a 6.60et at 116.61mph. Chuck the win in Top Fuel with a not too shabby 5,24et at 130.31mph. CONGRATS CHUCK!!! Chuck said,”I came for the trophy and trophy girl’s picture.”
In the Harley Pro Fuel categoryWe saw in the first round of eliminations Freddie Robbins doing a solo bye-win taking him in the second round. Freddie was the lowest qualifier with 5.8 et. Howard Wiggins. Howard of Oklahoma City, OK qualified the day before but took a leave of absence during eliminations. Freddie is from Lewisville, NC and is sponsored by Mike Bahnmaier Racing. The second duo was Bandido Rockstone vs. Chris Kirby of Cottonwood, CA blew up his engine during the following run so Rockstone did a bye-run and won with 4.99et. Bent Rod Racing’s Paul Kelly is from Mohall, ND. He’s sponsored by V-Twin from Howard Wiggins and Paul’s Bent Rod of Mohall, North Dakota also had broke previously. We saw in the final round of eliminations saw Bandido Rockstone vs. Freddie Robbins. Bandido Rockstone of LA, is the fastest man on this planet, he is the man. His bike is very consistent and conquers just about every foe with victorious wins!!
Rockstone is a battle by himself – let alone on a race track. If I didn’t know better, I would have bet Rockstone was born dragging his bike out with him. This was a very close match but Bandido Rockstone won with et 4.99 at 132.43 with Freddie Robbins ran a 5.36et at 122.76mph. Bandido Racing Team’s Bandido Rockstone is sponsored by Fas Coonass Racing and Gulf Coast Tattoos. Rockstone says to his competitor, “Tell me how my tail lights are working.”
In the Harley V-Rod Destroyer category, I would like to say THANK YOU to Houston, TX’s Darrell Jowhalbach whose sponsor is Marabar for coming up and making a try at the Black Hills Gold. Also, Gillette, WY’s Andie Gaskins of JAG Drag Racing. She’s sponsored by Shotgun Willies, Rapid City, SD. The Harley V-Rod Destroyer category first round of eliminations saw Jeff Petre doing a bye solo-win taking him to next round. The final duo saw Mike vs. Darnell. Houston, TX’s Darrell Jowhalbach whose sponsor is Marabar Oil. Alberta’s Mike Evanshyn won 6.58et. The final round of eliminations saw TWO CANADIANS –Mike Evanyshyn of Sylvan Lake vs. Jeff Pitre of Yellowknife…they live where the Ice Road Truckers are. Mike is sponsored by Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson of Red River Alberta, Canada. Jeff won with 6.55et at 108.96mph against Mike’s 6.58et. at 106.87mph. A couple great guys but they sure do talk funny (they said I talked funny).
In the Harley Top Gas Category, Redding, CA’s Beau Layne won first place.
Bent Rod Racing’s Paul Kelly of Mohall, ND won the Harley Nostalgia Top Fuel. He’s sponsored by Paul’s Bent Rod.
The Sportsman group (run-what-ya-brung) had a great day this day. The King of the Cash Winner was a local guy on a Ninja from Belle Fourche, SD, Mad Dad Racing’s Charles “Ninja Charlie” Snyder is sponsored by Bad Medicine Racing. He also won the Y Class. Bracket A was won by Jeff Murphy of Sioux Falls, SD on his Suzuki. Bracket B was won by Scott Granut of Gillette, WY on his Yamaha.
On Thursday, August 12, our track was active with a filming crew from American Chopper with Paul, SR. from Orange County Choppers unveiling an electric drag bike. The man that had it built, proudly did a few passes and burnouts on his new ride for the wild side of life. This episode will air September 30, 2010 on the TLC Channel. TMDR will be on there, gosh, I’m a rock star – famous and still broke. Also, there was a motorized skateboard that tried to break the world’s record in the eighth mile. TMDR has a contract for next year – this will be bigger and better!!!
